Online sports betting has been a big hit in New York over the past year, but the surge in popularity has also led to an increase in problem gambling cases. Recently, experts on the New York Gambling Commission reported that more and more young people in New York State are looking for help with their obsessive gambling habits.

In January this year, the state market operated for a year in mobile sports betting operations, and Governor Cathy Hochul announced that in the first year, the state earned US$909 million in sports betting. Meanwhile, out of the total amount, US$709 million came from Sports Online Betting. However, these numbers worry addiction experts about betters.

NYCPG director James Manny commented that the start of mobile sports betting and the expansion of games in the state were responsible for an increase in the number of teenagers aged 18 to 24 who are now morbid gamblers. He also criticized the state for spending more money promoting it than advertising counseling on gambling addiction

At the legislative meeting, Manny admitted that there was undoubtedly an advantage of new online offerings, but he raised concerns about the cost of online offerings to local residents. He shared that Congress often receives calls at 1 a.m. or calls from parents about how college children lose money and ask for professional help.

The expert also noted that since online sports betting began, the council's recommended network phone lines have recorded a 25% increase in call volume, adding that without a strong public awareness campaign, more people will start gambling, which will eventually increase the risk of becoming victims of compulsive gambling.

According to his estimates, the state government will have to invest US$10 million annually to help local residents recognize warning signs of problem gambling. However, Manny suggested that 3% of online gaming revenue, or about $21 million, should be set aside for services for gambling problems. However, according to him, the state is willing to pay less.

Some lawmakers in Empire State are also concerned about the negative impact of online sports gambling and the growing marketing it has across the state. In January, Democrats Louis Sepulveda and Leroy Comley introduced Senate Bill S1550 requiring all gambling ads in the state to have warnings of possible negative impacts and numbers for the New York problem gambling hotline.

The mobile sports betting market has levied a 51% tax on online sportsbooks, which could bring worse news for local sports betting companies. Recently, the head of leading sportsbook brands Panduel and DraftKings noted that if the state doesn't lower the tax rate, operators will have no choice but to offer worse betting odds to users.
