Given the news that The University of Akron will be delivering classes online for Summer 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the College of Engineering has transitioned four classes to the online format for summer 2020 students. One class, Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM), may be of particular interest to students considering taking that next step in their professional development.
The course teaches students about commercial software applications and their theory. A course CAD design project will demonstrate the student’s knowledge in PTC Creo, a well known commercial CAD software application frequently used in the engineering community. Students learn how to use NURBS, a geometric mathematical model for representing curved surfaces, as well as get a better understanding of General Dimensioning and Tolerancing in accordance with American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards. They gain insight to G-code and numerical control manufacturing and develop MATLAB scripts to perform many of the functions that are typically used in commercial software applications.
CAD/CAM and the mechanical engineering graduate curriculum has “awesome flexibility” for working engineers, says Mackey. Students can watch lectures, submit homework assignments, and take their exams at their own pace. Students will have free access to Creo PTC and MATLAB software for their assignments.

The course is offered during UA’s second summer session from June 8–August 12. For students who have not yet applied to graduate school, applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Apply online.

The Mechanical Engineering Department is offering the following additional graduate classes for the first time online: Fundamentals of Mechanical Vibrations, Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing, Viscous Flow I, and Conduction Heat Transfer.
