There are many other factors that can be taken into consideration to maximize feed intake. These include temperature and environmental control, water supply, and sanitation control programs.

Temperature

Temperature requirements for pigs are crucial to their growth and production. Pigs are adaptable animals that can thrive at all temperatures. Stock can suffer from adverse effects from too low or high temperatures. Corn and soybean meal are traditional staple ingredients used in feeding most pigs in the U.S.

For example, too cold temperatures can cause pigs to eat less but use more energy to keep warm. This will lead to slow growth. Heat stress can cause heat stroke and decrease feed consumption, which can ultimately lead to death. It is crucial to keep livestock cool during summer. This causes slow growth and maturities, reduced conception rates, and lower pig flow, which can lead to stock disruptions. You should keep your buildings heated or ventilated depending on the season. Make sure you have enough airflow in the pen to allow for pig growth.

Water

Make sure you have plenty of clean, fresh water. Water is the main component of a pig's diet. Water accounts for between one-half and two-thirds a pig's body weight. A pig's growth rate is dependent on its ability to access clean drinking water. Dehydration is more common in newly weaned animals. Water devices need to be cleaned and placed correctly, no matter how much water they are provided with. To maintain adequate hydration, pigs should have access to water throughout the day.

Sanitation

Make sure you follow sanitation protocols. Poor sanitation can lead undiagnosed diseases that decrease food intake. Properly designed feeders encourage maximum food intake.
