Beauty and the Beast 2022
It generally doesn't get much more family-friendly and wholesome than a Disney cartoon. To get more news about Watch movies on mobile phones in Japan and South Korea, you can visit our official website.
However, director Bill Condon's recent announcement that the character LeFou was gay and in love with Gaston has outraged a minority of religious groups in America.
One cinema has even prompted outrage by announcing it is banning the film altogether.
A statement said: "When companies continually force their views on us we need to take a stand."The statement from the Alabama cinema, the Henagar Drive-In, continued: "If we can not take our 11 year old grand daughter and 8 year old grandson to see a movie we have no business watching it.
"If I can't sit through a movie with God or Jesus sitting by me then we have no business showing it."
The statement ended: "I know there will be some that do not agree with this decision. That's fine. We are first and foremost Christians. We will not compromise on what the Bible teaches.
"We will continue to show family oriented films so you can feel free to come watch wholesome movies without worrying about sex, nudity, homosexuality and foul language."
While such reactions could have been expected, there already seems to be some confusion whether the whole situation has been blown way out of proportion. Condon said of the gay revelation: "Josh [Gad] makes something really subtle and delicious out of it. That’s what has its pay-off at the end, which I don’t want to give away. But it is a nice, exclusively gay moment in a Disney movie.”
LeFou actor Josh Gad has already revealed his own misgivings that people will expect too much from the moment and that he was not aware of the subtext when he read the script.
A recent reviewer in Variety commented that he couldn't even spot the supposed gay moment at all.
