Early life and background
Shah Rukh Khan was born on 2 November 1965 in New Delhi, India. His father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan). His mother, Lateef Fatima, was the daughter of a prominent lawyer. Shah Rukh has one sister and two brothers; his elder sister Shehnaz is the wife of actor Sanjay Dutt. He spent the first five years of his life in Mangalore where his paternal grandfather Ifthikar Ahmed served as the chief engineer of the port in the 1960s. In 1971, his family moved back to Delhi.
Khan attended St. Columba's School in central Delhi where he excelled in his studies and sports such as hockey and football. He won numerous accolades during his school days. In 1980, he enrolled at Hansraj College (then affiliated with Delhi University) to earn a bachelor's degree in economics. However, he spent more time on theatre than studies and failed two courses in his first year. Later he joined Barry John's Theatre Action Group (TAG) where he trained under theatre director Feroz Abbas Khan for two years.
