Can activated charcoal act as adsorbent?
Activated carbon is a specially treated carbon. It has a rich pore structure and a large specific surface area. The surface area per gram of activated carbon is 500 - 1200 square meters. Activated carbon has the characteristics of strong adsorption capacity, good chemical stability, high mechanical strength, and easy regeneration. It is widely used in industries, agriculture, national defense, transportation, medicine and health, and environmental protection. Activated carbon as a porous adsorbent is basically an amorphous substance. It is composite non woven fabric, composed of fine graphite - like crystallites and hydrocarbons that connect them together. The gaps between the solid parts form pores, which give the activated carbon adsorption performance.
Activated carbon has strong physical adsorption and chemical adsorption functions, and also has detoxification effects. The detoxification effect is to use its large surface area to adsorb the poison in the micropores of the activated carbon, thereby preventing its absorption of the poison. At the same time, activated carbon cloth can be combined with a variety of chemical substances to prevent these substances from absorbing poisons.
Under the condition of low air velocity, filter fabric can absorb carbon dioxide in the air very well, and the energy consumption of the system is also low. Ambient temperature has little effect on the adsorption efficiency of carbon dioxide on the surface of activated carbon non woven fabric, but low air humidity is conducive to the adsorption of carbon dioxide. Under the experimental conditions, the adsorption efficiency of VOCs on the surface of activated carbon and non woven fabric has nothing to do with the volume fraction of VOCs in the upwind airflow, but is related to the types of pollution sources. The low air flow speed is conducive to the adsorption of VOCs.
Although increasing the number of adsorption layers is not only conducive to the adsorption of carbon dioxide on the surface of the
activated carbon filter material, it is also conducive to the adsorption of VOCs. But in the experiment, when the adsorption layer is increased to more than three layers, the effect of increasing the adsorption efficiency with the increase of the adsorption thickness is no longer obvious, and the resistance of the adsorption system will increase rapidly.
