It was Minnesota Timberwolves' Kevin Garnett who was featured on the cover of first Backyard Basketball, Leslie was present in the game and  you could even play as her or Garnett.

Houston Comets stars Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes both missed the 2001 WNBA season. Cooper is a two-time MVP and four-time champion, resigned following the season of 2000. He returned in 2003. Swoopes was participant in the four championships, and was the league's MVP of the year, did not play in the 2001 season due to a torn ACL. After helping the Sparks win their first title in September of 2001, Leslie won not only the MVP award of 2001 but also the Finals MVP. Within a month, Backyard Basketball was released with her chosen as the only woman in the real world (Garnett was the only male player) instead of Cooper and Swoopes.

Cooper and Swoopes were among the first to be acknowledged as the WNBA's real faces But it was Leslie who was the first to be known as the league's representative for Backyard Basketball's target audience that included me. Leslie was the first WNBA player I had heard of and influenced me to get into women's basketball.

Since then, my interest in the sport grew gradually. After their national championships of 2004 in women's and men's basketball, UConn Huskies were featured on the Sports Illustrated cover, featuring Emeka Okafor. Then, I was an avid Sacramento Monarchs fan. I saw them play in the 2006 WNBA Finals against Detroit Shock. Since watching Parker perform in the 2007 national championship , which was won by the Tennessee Lady Volunteers, I've been interested in women's basketball. I began to cover the WNBA in 2012.
