In my opinion, the "gender" feature should really be taken out of the MS Mesos. Make all characters, equipment, and decorative elements gender-neutral.
Reasoning: "Gender" in MapleStory functions no gameplay function. Female and male characters have the exact very same stats, the very same abilities, and the same quests (seldom with minor conversation gaps), with the exception of courses that are gender-locked due to narrative reasons (Mihile, Angelic Buster, and Zero). A character's "sex" can also be unrelated to the player's gender. Any participant can make characters of both genders.
The one thing that a character's gender does is limit the player's cosmetic customization options. You can just use half the hairstyles and half the faces, and there are lots of cash shop equipment items and in-game anvil choices that are blocked by the sex you are using. These constraints don't even do an especially good job in preventing individuals from dressing up as the "opposite" sex, since there are "April Fool's" hair and face styles, and you will find these things as gender-neutral facial hair face accessories, or gender-neutral (or perhaps outright Male) frilly dresses.
So while people intent on cross-dressing their characters (which, I remind the reader, do not even have to get the same gender as their owners) can do this cheapest Maplestory Mesos, ordinary players that simply enjoy a thing that happens to get the opposite sex to their personality, can not utilize it. (For example, randomly looking at this week's Money Shop Update, it reveals the Paper Box and Ghost Uniform overall as Male. How are they man? The box is just a box and also the phantom uniform is a black gown, but "feminine" characters can not wear it?) . And the popular gender-neutral CRA top and bottom have very few Fusion Anvil choices, just because top and bottom items in the game, even fundamental T-shirts, possess a sex.
Despite these restrictions, the gender of a character does not really affect how it it left. Whoever has used BannedStory or any other character simulator understands that the game only has one shape for a mind and body sprite, and that, graphically, you can place any hairstyle/face/equipment on any personality, mixing and matching genders, without leading to any hitch in its animation.
So, I suggest that the "sex" attribute simply be taken out of the game. Allow the users personalize their characters in any way they see fit. If a user would like to earn a feminine-looking character, they could. And if they want a personality using a buzzcut and a dress, then they can do this also. This will also allow any two characters to get married or share a couple ring/shirt/chair/etc..
In terms of the gender-restricted clases: Mihile has no better motive to be gender-locked compared to Phantom, actually. Zero is equally genders anyhow.
Angelic Buster's narrative quests might appear to "require" it be feminine (and its altered form be extra female), but right now AB players are permitted to customize their personality and make it look quite a bit more "butch" than the story suggests. The story can continue to be about a magic woman, while offering the players even more customization liberty.
