Initially Volkmann sharp edged spoons were  Tinnitus 911 Review used as curette. Samuel Kopetzky, American otologist advised that one should become dexterous and elegant with the use of a set of instruments. Newer instruments (design wise) should be introduced only when they have distinct advantages over the tried out older ones. This observation holds good even today.

The patients are tested in the supine position with the head slightly bent to minimize myogenic activity. The forehead is cleaned and electrodes applied with electrode paste.. the non-inverting (positive) electrode is applied over the forehead and the inverting (negative) over the mastoid of the test ear. The resistance of the electrodes is maintained below 5kohms across the electrodes. A filtered click is used as a stimulus. The resultant electrical activity is processed using filters set at bandwidth of 150 to 3000 Hz.

The waveform is obtained after averaging 2000 sweeps in all the cases to eliminate random components without diminishing the neurological responses which are time bound to the signal in relation to the random responses. The repetition rate is usually 30 sweeps per second. The analysis time is 10 milliseconds. Alternate polarity is used to eliminate electrical artifacts generated by the stimulus earphone. Adequate low sound environment is obtained and the room is kept at low light levels in order to minimize disturbance to the child. The procedure is carried out only when satisfactory test conditions were achieved in the recording room.
