From trying to lower our cholesterol to  iGenics Review drinking less, it seems everywhere you look people are taking greater care of their bodies. Yet almost everyone forgets to take care of a couple of organs that we all use and abuse, our eyes. In fact most people are unaware that our eyes are even organs in the first place, let alone how to properly take care of them! So to better take care of our eyes it is important to understand that they are prone to health problems, just like every other organ in our bodies.

Because of the fact that the eyes are organs, they can suffer from things like diabetes related issues, and are affected by smoking. In fact smokers typically are twice as likely to lose their sight in later life as people who do not smoke. This is due to the damage of the blood vessels behind the eye, which is prone to increasing deterioration in later life.

You should have an eye examination at least once every two to four years, especially if you are diabetic or smoke and at least once a year or every two years if you have a family history of eye related problems or issues. Some eye conditions are hereditary and it is likely, although not for certain, that if your parents and other family members wear glasses then you may too. There are also hereditary diseases such as glaucoma that can severely effect or damage your eyes if left untreated. Simply put glaucoma is the build up of fluid in the eye, which causes an increase in pressure which destroys nerve cells in the eye. It is caused by a blockage in the part of your eye that drains away your eyes natural lubrication.
