Dealing With Your Problem - What Does It Actually Mean?

Asking for help is often difficult for families. Many Brain C-13 people were raised to believe that parents should be able to manage each and every challenge without assistance. Not only is this expectation unrealistic, many families struggle needlessly when help is readily available. Let us suppose that you are like many other parents and have secretly wondered whether professional intervention is what you need.

Most parents have little difficulty deciding to seek professional assistance when there is an emergency. When problems begin suddenly, it generally gets a parent's attention. Similarly, when a child hears voices that aren't really there or threatens suicide, Mom and Dad get help. Parents also know it is "all right" to reach out when their child is setting fires, being cruel to animals, or carving symbols into their arms.

It can be more difficult to decide whether you need professional help when your child's behavior is usually normal but there are behaviors that you really want to change, e.g., bedwetting, nail-biting, or sibling squabbles. If every parenting strategy you have tried fails to get results, consultation with a mental health professional or primary care provider could be the answer. As we know, doing more of whatever is not working probably won't work again next time either.
