Understanding the stages of sleep can help SlumberPM Review you plan your night and evaluate what may be causing your fatigue. On average people may sleep between 7 - 9 hours a night and travel through 4 or 5 cycles of sleep. Each cycle last for approximately 90 minutes and consists of 5 stages. The good news to all you sufferers of chronic insomnia the restorative phase of sleep which is known as stage 4 occurs within the first 3 hours! STAGE 1 - NREM (non rapid eye movement) sleeping - you are feeling drowsy. STAGE 2 - NREM sleeping - feeling very relaxed, waking up still easy - hear sounds easily. STAGE 3 - NREM sleeping - deeper sleep - don't hear sounds as readily.

STAGE 4 - NREM sleeping - deepest stage of sleeping, 40% blood flow to the brain is redirected to muscles to restore energy. Sound asleep, most stable stage of sleep. This stage is repeated 3 times within the first 3 hours of sleep! STAGE 5 - REM (rapid eye movement) sleep - dreaming occurs, consolidates memory and emotion - if woken during this stage you will feel very disorientated. If you suffer chronic insomnia you may not be reaching all sleep stages and completing the recommended 4 to 5 cycles of sleep - leaving you physically and mentally fatigued.

In the first cycle of sleep, most of the 90 minutes is spent in "deep sleep" (stage 4 NREM sleep). However, after each cycle that follows after a period of REM sleep, less and less time is spent in deep sleep and more time in REM and stage 2. Therefore if you suffer from chronic insomnia you can feel comforted by the fact that most deep sleep occurs within the first 4 hours of sleep. This will be enough to help you physically function and you will be receiving the same amount of deep sleep as those who can sleep 8-10 hours per night.
