At the very beginning of its existence, Windows Defender was one of the worst antiviruses ever. However, nowadays it is comparable to other free antiviruses but still not a match for best-paid antiviruses.

You should definitely avoid free antivirus software because as soon as you install them they will tell you that you should upgrade to the full version to get real security.

They are just advertisement schemes and do not offer any competitive detection, cleaning or prevention capabilities. You should take a look at an honest benchmark and decide for yourself how much are you willing to spend and what features do you value the most.

It's really hard to find an honest benchmark because they all get paid to promote, but here is one that at least tells the truth Best Antivirus 2018 The choice of the best antivirus depends on the personal needs and preferences of the particular user:

Some antiviruses exceed at being fast and efficient, those are well suited for laptops and older computers.
Some are easy to manage, those are well suited for inexperienced users.
Some have lots of additional features like secure payment processing, browser protection, etc.
Some have a very good value to price rating.
