The once-glamorous England legend is looking a little lonely.
Britain's 'The Sun' reported on Tuesday (Sept. 10), "Rooney was spotted for the first time since he was sacked by Birmingham. He was seen looking downcast as he filled up his £120,000 Audi with gas at a petrol station in Cheshire, England," and released a photo of Rooney.
Rooney was recently sacked by Birmingham City. "Birmingham have today parted company with Rooney and first-team coach Karl Robinson. "Despite their best efforts, results have fallen short of the expectations that were clear from the outset," the club said.
"The board has therefore decided that a change in management is in the best interests of the club and has taken this decision. We would like to thank Mr. Rooney and Mr. Robinson for all their hard work," the club said in a statement confirming Rooney's departure.
Rooney is an England and Manchester United legend. Rooney joined United from Everton ahead of the 2004-05 season and went on to play at the highest level for 13 years. With Rooney at the center, the Red Devils won five Premier League (PL) titles, one UEFA Champions League (UCL) title, and several other trophies.
In his final years with Derby County, Rooney worked as a player-coach. He took over as interim manager after the dismissal of Philippe Coutinho in the 2020-21 season, before becoming the full-time manager in January 2021. However, Derby County were relegated to League One (third tier) of the English Football League (EFL) due to financial problems, and Rooney left the club.
After hanging up his boots at Derby County in 2022, Rooney quickly found his next job. It was his hometown team, DC United. Rooney had already experienced the MLS when he joined DC United in the summer of 2018 at the age of 32.
It was Rooney's return to coaching after a four-year absence. He took over during the season, but the team finished 13th in the Eastern Conference. This season, they finished ninth in the league, but failed to qualify for the round of 16 in the Final Series playoffs. Add to that a feud with the organization.
He eventually left the club in October, but was shortly afterward named the new manager of English Championship (second tier) side Birmingham.
