Jim Ratcliffe, chairman of Ineos and the richest man in the U.K., who took over the management rights of Manchester United, was shocked to see a more serious waste of money than expected in the team. When I tried to organize some of the players for the sake of Manchester United's fiscal soundness, I saw some contracts that could not be easily sold at high cost and low efficiency. A case in point was Brazilian midfielder Casemiro. It was a nightmare that Ratcliffe met.
British media The Sun reported on the 7th (Korean time), "Sir Ratcliffe, who is trying to improve Manchester United's overspending problem, has a nightmare after encountering Casemiro's dilemma." It is a typical example of the homework that Ratcliffe has to solve at Manchester United in the future. Ratcliffe acquired a 25 percent stake in Manchester United for 1.03 billion pounds (about 1.67 trillion won) around Christmas last year, acquiring the right to operate. Still, the Glazer family owns Manchester United, but now it can be said that Ratcliffe is the main body of the club's management.
Ratcliffe established Ineos, a giant company, to apply his experience as England's richest man to Manchester United. To this end, a strong restructuring is needed first. The company plans to create a new Manchester United after organizing excessive expenditures or overlapping investments within the team.
The plan, however, was met with huge difficulties from the start. According to The Sun, "The Ineos acquisition team, spearheaded by Ratcliffe and his right-hand man, Sir Dave Brazford, have found a lot of extra money in Manchester United's takeover of the club from the Glazers. Their foremost goal is to cut the wages of Manchester United players."
Then, he mentioned Casemiro as a representative example of the "nightmare" that Sir Ratcliffe met. Casemiro, whom Ratcliffe classified as the "priority target" for sale, transferred from Real Madrid to Manchester United in August 2022 for 60 million pounds. His weekly salary is as much as 350,000 pounds. He performed well in the 2022-2023 season, his first season of joining the club, but he is the opposite in the 2023-2024 season. His form has declined, and his injuries have not helped him at all. Selling it is the right decision.
However, Casemiro cannot be easily sold. While his weekly salary is incredibly high, his contract is still two and a half years away. The Sun pointed out that Manchester United will have to pay 30 million pounds (about 50.2 billion won) to Casemiro. However, few clubs want Casemiro to do so. The price is too high and he is recovering from injury. This means that there are not many profit models that Ratcliffe can expect from the sale of players in January. Donny van the Beek has already been loaned to Frankfurt, while Sergio Reguilon has returned to Tottenham. Luke Shaw and Tyrrell Malacia are recovering from injury. There is no player to sell at a reasonable price.
