Many meal replacements contain too much sugar and little protein Protein is an expensive ingredient. Probably partly for that reason, producers appear to be quite economical in adding this essential ingredient to their diet products. However, it is very unfortunate that they appear to fill the protein deficiency mainly with large amounts of sugar. In June 2016, the Dutch Consumers' Association published the results of its own research into the composition of various protein shakes and meal replacement bars. Of the 31 products tested, 23 are below par. For example, Weight Care's meal shake appears to contain more sugar than a glass of coke. At the same time, it contains hardly any protein and fiber. Meal shakes from, for example, Lucovitaal, Damhert, Biamed and Kruidvat's own brand are also very poor. If you look at the fiber content, Cambridge 500 takes the lead:
