The Challenge has been extensively expanded to include a wider range of project and award categories, with the aim of establishing a prestigious national urban design platform and becoming an internationally influential event.
I. Comprehensive improvements with more competitions
The SUDC 2023 mainly includes 3 competitions, namely the Shanghai International Urban Design Awards, the Typical City Block Urban Design Competition and the Micro Space Urban Design Competition. The Shanghai International Urban Design Awards aims to solicit urban design projects initiated and implemented in domestic and overseas cities with a focus on "practical interpretation". The Typical City Block Urban Design Competition seeks to discover exceptional urban designs for four typical types of city blocks in Shanghai: urban renewal, green ecology, railway stations and rural revitalisation, with an emphasis on "innovative insight". The Micro Space Urban Design Competition aims to promote the concept of a "15-minute community life circle". Centred on the theme of the "Six Arts Pavilion", the competition seeks remarkable designs in two categories: Universal Design for Six Arts Pavilion and Site-specific Design for Six Arts Pavilion, with a focus on igniting 'sparks of thought'. This year's challenge, comprising these 3 competitions, has a total of 56 awards across 9 categories.

II. The Shanghai International Urban Design Awards
The establishment of the Shanghai International Urban Design Awards aims to collect urban design projects initiated and implemented in cities around the world, and to promote a global platform for communication in the field of urban design. Entries must be projects that have been initiated and implemented in recent years (within the last 5 years) and demonstrate a certain degree of influence, representativeness and innovation in the field of urban development. Participation is restricted to institutions. The prizes are divided into three categories:
III. Urban design competition for typical city blocks
Focusing on small and medium-sized typical city blocks, the competition aims to discover exceptional urban designs for four typical types of city blocks in Shanghai: urban renewal, green ecology, railway stations and rural revitalisation.

1. Urban renewal: The area north of Hai'an Road on Fuxing Island and the waterfront area along the Fuxing Island Canal in Yangpu District have been selected as the base for this competition project. The total area is about 50 hectares. The base is located in the adjacent areas along the northern and central sections of the Yangpu Riverside, the northern part of Fuxing Island and the western side of the Fuxing Island Canal. The northern part of Fuxing Island and the Fuxing Island Canal are of great importance as an ecological space and a node in the natural and cultural landscape of Yangpu District. They serve as an ecological space that promotes the development of Shanghai's urban and rural culture, embody the historical development of urban and rural areas, have close links with historical and cultural heritage, and showcase various humanistic elements. They also have close links with the scientific research zone on the western side of the canal. All these factors have combined to make these sites a strategic node with vital functions along the Yangpu River. The aim is to design a 'high quality riverside space' with a focus on riverside open space creation, ecological space design, dynamic functional configuration and landscape control. Through this design, the project aims to promote open space creation in the riverside area by fully exploring riverside resources, protecting and preserving the ecological system and cultural heritage on the island and riverside area, and improving regional services.
