The American Bulldog is an athletic and versatile dog that displays strength, endurance, agility and a friendly demeanor. Historically, they were bred to be working dogs for farm work.

The American Bulldog is descended from the English Bulldog. Bulldogs are believed to have existed in America since the 17th century. They came to the United States with immigrants with their working bulldogs in the 19th century. Smallholder farmers and ranchers use these versatile working dogs for a variety of tasks including guarding farms, herding and hunting. This species has largely survived, especially in the southern states, due to its ability to kill and capture wild boars.

The breed we know as the American Bulldog was originally known by various names before the name American Bulldog became standard. Known as the White English Southern Bulldog in various parts of the South, but mostly just "Bulldog". This breed is not called a bulldog because of its specific appearance, but because they have done the work of a real bulldog.
