Greetings,

A 3D Printer is a machine which works on the principle of additive manufacturing. By definition, 3D printing is a manufacturing process of converting a 3D CAD
file into a tangible solid three-dimensional object by successively laying down thin layers of material.

In simplistic form, you can consider that you draw any sketch on a piece of A4 paper.
A paper is considered to have only two dimensions (length and width). Now replicate that same sketch on 100 A4 papers and stack them one over the other.
Now you can measure the height of the stack as well. This becomes the third dimension of the sketch, or you can call it as a three-dimensional drawing.

So, in short, a single paper can be considered as a single layer. And a 3D printer lays down multiple such layers one above the other and forms a solid three-dimensional object.

This explanation was in lay man's terms. So, I would suggest you read the below-shared articles for understanding the exact working of a 3D printer.
