Extruded fish feed has many advantages over traditional pelleted and powdery compound feeds. They can also overcome common disadvantages like poor water stability, feed disappearing, waste, and water quality pollution. Aqua feed floating extruded feed is especially convenient for feeding management. It can float on the water for a long period of time, so there's no need to set a feeding station or place a fixed feeding point. Fish farmers are able to monitor the health and growth of their fish and adjust their feeding quantities as needed. Extruded fish feed is a great way to save time and increase labor productivity. Extruded aqua feed is a great choice for modern aquaculture because of its market potential and broad application.

Different aquatic culture animals have different ingestion characteristics. This is why it is important to choose extruded fish food types. River crabs are used to eating from the bottom of the water. Aqua feed must not be too hard, too stiff, or too slow. Extruded sinking food is better for river crabs because it can be easily dissolved in water. It is also easier to eat, and has a longer water resistance, which reduces feed waste and decreases water contamination.

Aquaculture species, including those that are benthonic, can also ingest floating extruded feed. This is not just for famous fish species like aquarium fish, but also for traditional cultivation such as grass crap, crucian and catfish, tilapia, and so forth. Extruded floating fish feed is also more suitable for breeding, which means it can be used for pond fish farms, running water fish culture, cage cultivation, and fish farms with lower breeding densities.

Brabender, a German equipment manufacturer has been working with aqua feed producers and research institutions to develop novel feed formulations for a variety of farmed fish species and crustacean species in its laboratory. Laboratory extruders allow aqua feed to be tested on a smaller scale.

Cost is an issue when using new raw materials such as microalgae or insect protein. Landers stated that when you are trying to develop products with these raw materials, you will need lots of material. It is also possible to waste a lot of it. Therefore, it is better to test expensive feed ingredients with a small extruder and produce samples this way.

Hot extrusion is used for floating feed. This includes suspended and slowly sinking feed. This allows for good pellet expansion. This is used to sink feed. Cold extrusion is the preferred method for producing quickly sinking pellets that expand with minimal expansion."

Academic researchers and feed formulators want to know which protein sources are compatible with extrusion. They also need to know the percentage of carbohydrate and protein in those sources. They said that the moisture content, as well as the proportion of protein, carbohydrate, and fat in the original mixture, will determine whether or not a product expands.
