I recently received another 'please help' mail from a lady named Ian who runs an adventure company in Tanzania (
http://www.betheladventure.co.uk ). Ian was concerned about the consequence of a number of problems including indexing and url dampening, and was desperate for help. Unfortuitously, he'd read some relatively misleading articles previously, so he'd a somewhat mixed-up knowledge of the factors at play. Be taught new information on
linklicious review by going to our pictorial link. I decided to publish the facts of our conversation, because I think he's perhaps not alone in his concern and frustration.
Ian's e-mail contained a few issues. I have listed each separately below, followed closely by my response.
Q: When I search for the amount of backlinks to my website using 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', I see only 2-3 results. It appears that only 23 of our backlinks have survived Google's dampening link filter. Can there be a time delay before they are credited to some site? '
A: Firstly, I think you may have the dampening link filter a little puzzled. In line with the dampening link filter idea, your links are located and recognized by Google, you simply don't have the full benefit from them until confirmed time frame has elapsed. The dampening link filter (if it exists) does not stop links from appearing in Google's benefits when you search for them. (The only reason your backlinks might not can be found in a Google search is if Google hasn't yet indexed the pages containing the links.) Also, do not worry too much about such things as the dampening link filter. For a start, it's far from proven / acknowledged fact. Several well regarded SEO professionals don't believe in it in any way. Moreover, even if it does occur, it only affects those organizations with the budget to create the large numbers (hundreds or thousands probably) of links reputedly required to induce it. That is not a problem, if your quantity of backlinks suddenly increases by 20.
And subsequently, don't feel every thing Google tells you. By trying to find 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', you generally only view a small proportion of actual links to your site. The easiest way to search for links is to search for just the URL 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk', then on-the page that displays next, select 'Find web pages that include the word 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk' .' If you do it this way, you'll see all of the pages which contain your URL. In most cases, the URL is going to be an active link (or at the least it should be, and you should ask them to make it so). When you do this search, you'll note that your site has about 169 links, perhaps not 2-3.
Q: Still another question is approximately found pages (using site:www.betheladventure.co.uk). I understand this is a report of pages which have been changed. I'd 3-2, it went down to 28 and now today it's down to 26. Do they just keep the pages for monthly or is there more to the pages than I realized?
A: The number of indexed pages is just the number of pages on your website that Google 'is aware of.' Theoretically, the only time the age of a page comes into play is once the page is also young*, i.e. Google spiders haven't visited it yet, or Google has not updated its list. As to the reasons the number of indexed pages is reducing, I believe it's only a temporary move. How many results in Google's searches differs virtually constantly.
*Actually, technically speaking, it has been suggested that Google is not capable of indexing all 11.5 million pages currently believed to be o-nline (and the 10 million more that are added everyday), and that as it indexes new pages, old pages are sent from the list. If this is happening, it may explain why the number of indexed pages is reducing. A great way to cope with it is to maintain top quality content, to keep generating backlinks, to keep increasing it, and to generate a Google sitemap, even though I think it's a long shot.
