Awarded as part of the government’s Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP), the contract will see the delivery of armour tiles to be used for testing by the Defense Research and Development Canada (DRDC).

Lumiant’s TitanMade is a patent pending Titanium Aluminide composite material that features favourable mechanical properties per unit mass compared to other technical ceramics.Developed as a result of an intensive research and development (R&D) effort for five years, the TitanMade ballistic armour tiles are used to meet the increasing demand for lightweight materials in challenging application environments.

“I am confident that TitanMade will provide great benefit to our Canadian Forces.”
In ballistic armour applications, the properties of TitanMade allow for the armour to be thin, lightweight and durable to help improve the mobility and survivability of military vehicles.

Lumiant Business Development director Kevin Harper said: “I am confident that TitanMade will provide great benefit to our Canadian Forces.

“I appreciate the support from the Government of Canada to accelerate TitanMade commercialisation with the BCIP contract award.”

In December last year, the company’s application to be a part of the BCIP programme was approved by the government, under which the country agreed to buy TitanMade armour tiles worth $1m for testing.

The BCIP has been designed to help Canadian companies of all sizes to move their latest and advanced goods and services from laboratory to marketplace.
