Intellectual property (IP) is a nonphysical creation of the human brain, usually expressed or translated into a non-physical format, i.e assigned certain rights of property. Intellectual Property includes an author's copyright on a book or article, on music or different design elements of a website, or a patent on a particular process to, for example, manufacture cold drinks.

Intellectual property law involves the protection of all four types i.e copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. In effect, the intellectual property provides the inventor of a new and novel invention or idea a temporary monopoly on its use.
