Is the gold in colloidal form actual gold?

A suspension of sub-micron gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in a solvent, most commonly water, is colloidal gold. They have a wide range of applications ranging from imaging to diagnostics to medicines because of their optical, electrical, and thermal properties.
