Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals plans to expand its hydroquinone plant in Iwakuni during the overhaul period in 2013, increasing its annual production capacity from the current 11,500 tons to 12,500 tons. Mitsui Chemicals is the leading manufacturer of hydroquinone in Japan. Due to the growing demand for hydroquinone in the global market for polymerization inhibitors, dyes, and rubber auxiliaries for acrylic acid and acrylonitrile, the global demand for hydroquinone will continue at an average annual rate of 3% to 4% over the next two years. Growth, coupled with the withdrawal of some hydroquinone producers from the market, will increase the demand in 2013 from 50,000 tons in 2010 to 54,000 tons. Mitsui Chemicals expects that the supply of hydroquinone will be tight in 2013.
