The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has become a popular vertebrate model to study organ formation and function because of its optical clarity and rapid embryonic development. The use of genetically modified zebrafish has also allowed the identification of new putative therapeutic drugs. So far, zebrafish as an animal model has been placed between more reductive in vitro high-throughput screening and beneficial but low-throughput preclinical assays using mammals.
