Daredevil's long-awaited joining up with the MCU is rumored to be happening soon, but the franchise should allow him to remain a street-level hero.

With Charlie Cox's Daredevil rumored to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the MCU has the perfect opportunity to introduce The Man Without Fear as a street-level hero, similar to what Spider-Man should be. Cox, who played the titular role in Netflix's Daredevil, has already been confirmed to be the MCU's Daredevil by Kevin Feige, though he didn't specify when or where. However the hero is introduced, the franchise needs to maintain his status as a street-level hero.

Daredevil was abruptly canceled after 3 seasons, following Disney’s decision to move all of the Marvel content from Netflix to Disney+, leaving audiences hungry for more of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen with no information on if, or when, he would return. Netflix's Murdock became a fan-favorite character, often dealing with human issues and moral conflict as often as he dealt with street-level criminals impacting lives in a personal way, more so than the Avengers-level threats often faced by Tom Holland's Spider-Man. The apparent revival of Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin in Hawkeye, as well as the appearance of Echo, another character often associated with Matt Murdock, both, make the Spider-Man appearance for the character more likely. The Daredevil show focused on the Manhattan neighborhood Hell's Kitchen, showcasing the types of cases Murdock took on as a lawyer and had a much more street-level focus until Daredevil's season 3 finale. Though originally the Marvel Netflix shows were hinted to be softly connected to the MCU, they haven’t been officially confirmed as MCU canon, especially after Marvel’s switch to Disney+ supposedly was the reason for their cancellation.

Since then, there has long been speculation about Daredevil and the other characters from the Netflix series coming to the MCU, with the same actors returning to reprise their roles. When Cox’s Daredevil does return to the MCU, he should remain a street-level hero, instead of facing mostly Avengers-level threats the way the MCU's Peter Parker has. Spider-Man’s “friendly neighborhood” aspect has all but been completely ignored in the MCU, reducing it to a montage in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Like Spider-Man, Daredevil is a New York-based hero, known for protecting Hell’s Kitchen from the city’s criminal underworld. Daredevil is the MCU’s chance to reclaim the street-level hero, and not simply resort to turning every MCU hero into an Avenger.

The MCU has mostly ignored the everyday hero stuff in favor of big villains who pose a threat to much of the world, or even the universe. Daredevil has done his fair share of taking down larger threats, but where he shines best is when he’s taking down the corrupt forces that plague the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. His nickname, the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, works because it relates to his ability to strike fear into the criminal element in his neighborhood, haunting them like a devil. Matt Murdock was trained by Stick to hone his advanced senses, which allow him to operate in the shadows. While the MCU has taken away most of the street-level aspects of Spider-Man, they should take Daredevil's return as a chance to make street-level vigilantism work in their larger universe, even on the big screen.

Daredevil can still provide gripping, exciting content without taking Murdock’s adventures too far outside of Hell’s Kitchen. Hawkeye is proof that smaller, street-level conflicts can work in an MCU that also deals with major events like the Blip. The Hawkeye series’ New York setting is classic Marvel comics stuff. Facing bad guys like the Tracksuit Mafia, a bumbling but dangerous group of criminals that aren’t superpowered, lets Hawkeye shine in a setting where he isn’t overshadowed by teammates who are often practically gods. Daredevil deserves the same treatment. He deserves the intimate, introspective plots that elevated the Netflix series, and he deserves to face villains that allow him to be the hero of Hell’s Kitchen, specifically.
