The final battle with Thrall wasn't lost. He was definitely losing his second fight against Varian as well as his duel against Cairne. He lost the first fight but was cut shorter, and he won the second battle unfairly.
The three of them fought three times and were each time stopped. Varian takes the victory in Wolfheart because he has unlimitable stamina and is blessed with Lo'Gash. They're evenly matched when they battle in the midst of War.

Garrosh was not a participant of the Cataclysms wars. He was the leader of the invasion into the Twilight Highlands, beating a dragon while he moved. The speculations started to develop in MoP, I was certain that Garrosh was a fake that was created by the Twilight Hammer, and he disappeared.
