Vitamin B3, also called Niacin, is a water-soluble vitamin that is part of the B vitamin family. Vitamin B3 is the generic term for nicotinic acid, its amide (nicotinamide or niacinamide), and their biologically active derivatives. Low concentrations of this can be produced by the human body from the amino acid tryptophan, however larger concentrations must be ingested via food.
