Wow has had 20 years of development effort and WOW TBC Classic Gold experience thrown at it. Apart from shitty systems and decisions... It functions, the game works and has a full world built already. That's a lot more than we could say about a lot of mmos already. For the most part there aren't any game breaking issues that stop a massive portion of the player base from playing.
WoW also offers the submerged cost fallacy attached to it. Everyone put in 20k hours to the game feels connected to it and it has to get better. . Right? Those 20k hours weren't for nothing. . Right?
I feel as the price of building the mmo genre will be nearly impossible to enter without prior base.
There's a couple of ones on the horizon with a theoretical unlimited budget like new world and ashes of creation but those mmos would need to be polished to perfection and revolutionary to get people to stay on them and my hopes for these are not quite significant.
I used to chat with Hazzikostas regularly in Vanilla. We played on exactly the exact same server. He was among the most friendly and intelligent gamers I've ever met. I cannot fathom that he is genuinely incompetent. There is just no solution. He came to the gambling industry via guild management just like Pardo and Kaplan.

WoW's present state could be his endeavor to fix all the issues he had with early WoW for a raider, which caters to his particular experience and preferences, which might simply flat out not function in an existing game.
