It's is normally used as an inhibitor to modify cholesterol domains on the cellular surface. It is also known to prevent the action of nitric oxide synthase, cholera toxin and glucose transporter through internalization. Because MβCD can decrease  cholesteral level, the cell viability be affected as the genes regulating cholesterol levels are upregulated.
