Eventually, in my adult years, I did take  Uncompromised Life Review up karate hoping to focus my chi to help overcome personal obstacles, including the perpetual pain. I wanted to learn what power these people possessed that allowed them to do the things they did. Truth is, there is no special power at all. Anyone can break a concrete block with their hand if they want to. It comes down to calcification - that is what prevents damage in the short term. What about the pain? I've seen some guys take blows to the shins that would send me writhing in agony - surely they have mastered mind over matter, right? Wrong - the shins are beaten with sticks or other devices to deaden the nerves. It's simple conditioning that anyone can do.

Despite learning the secret, I pressed on until eventually I ended up almost unable to walk in the mornings. To make matter worse, the sensei was a firm believer in the suffering makes you stronger bit and prided himself in taking everyone over the edge. If people got sick and/or passed out, to him that was a sign of doing a great job. When one of his students dropped dead on the mat, I knew my suffering wasn't a case of me not trying hard enough. Screw the suffering, I said - I needed to achieve some goals.

Suffering doesn't make you stronger, overcoming obstacles does. You might need a little help at the beginning, maybe some guidance to show you the way (teacher), but using the tools, doing the work, and achieving the goal is what creates the satisfaction, the strength, and the confidence to stand up to even greater challenges. What's really cool is that once you start racking up accomplishments, the positive feeling feeds back and shunts the suffering closer to the back burner - where it belongs!
