Exercising early in the morning and eating many small meals are two proven ways to increase your metabolism. As we age, it becomes easier and easier to put on weight. I believe this has a lot to do with a decrease of cortisol being released (which is the chemical that is released under stressful situations), an increase of dopamine in the brain (due to exercising), and of course, a better outlook on life.
