"Under-promise and over-deliver" is a popular Manifestation Magic Review  quote by business guru Tom Peters. In career counseling, I share his quote frequently to help talented and highly-motivated professionals positively shape their reputations. Stretch goals are great and I never want to squelch a person's motivation, confidence, or optimism; I do, however, want everyone to consider how promises affect his or her professional reputation.

Over-promising (even with the best of intentions) unfortunately damages professional reputations when individuals fail to deliver, negatively affecting your credibility and the perceptions of your competence. In today's business environment, it is always better to consistently exceed everyone's expectations. (Remember that accolades are not often given for merely meeting expectations, only exceeding them.)

Art is subject to interpretation - as are your professional promises. Try to balance the following three factors the next time you make a promise on a work-related deliverable: Promises on Work Products - It is always a good idea to over-deliver on the quality of your work product, giving your client, supervisor, or colleague more than what he or she expects. Unless there is some perverse professional jealously, over-delivering on the quality of your work will always reflect positively on your credibility and competence.
