On top of mass insulation and over Backyard Revolution Review  your floor joists, it blocks rising warm air (heated within your home during winter) from penetrating the attic and escaping into the atmosphere. The radiant barrier just reflects it on back down into the living space. As a result, your HVAC cycles on less often because the temperature is more consistent, there isn't that constant loss. When HVAC equipment turns on less, it demands less energy - good for your wallet and good for the environment. Long term, it's even better for your wallet because the system gets less wear and tear.

When radiant barrier is installed along the rafters in your roof, it sufficiently blocks incoming radiant energy from the sun. While pretty insignificant during the winter, the summer months can be brutal. The radiant heat enters your attic through the roof and gradually heats up all surfaces including joists, glass, fiberglass, and wall board. The result? Well that heat infiltrates your living spaces too. Your air conditioning system has to work hard to constantly combat the sneaky heat that is seeping in. But if you had radiant barrier along the rafters, you'd reflect that heat right back outside without ever damaging your shingles. Some homeowners choose to use radiant barrier as a house wrap, much like other well-known vapor barriers. The tiny perforations allow for some "breathability" while the 99% aluminum stops heat loss/gain.

Not all reflective insulation is equal. Some work better in colder climates while others work better in warmer climates. Additionally, how and where you install the insulation will determine what you will achieve as far as directing radiant heat goes. Do you want to keep the heat outside or do you want to retain that heat within the walls of the interior living area? In many cases you want a reflective insulation that will do both depending on the season.
